Grand Rapids, Michigan – Drivers across western Michigan could face snow-covered roads and powerful wind gusts through Tuesday morning as bands of accumulating snow sweep across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday for much of western Michigan, including Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Allegan, Van Buren, Barry, Mecosta, Newaygo, Calhoun, and Osceola counties. Snowfall totals vary across the region, ranging from 1 to 3 inches near Grand Rapids and Hastings to 4 to 6 inches along the lakeshore and as much as 7 inches in parts of Newaygo County.

Communities including Grand Rapids, Holland, Muskegon, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Fremont, and Big Rapids may see conditions deteriorate quickly during heavier snow bursts. Wind gusts reaching 45 mph could blow snow across highways and reduce visibility in open areas.

Travel could be especially difficult along Interstate 96 near Muskegon and Grand Rapids, U.S. 131 through Kent and Mecosta counties, and Interstate 94 near Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches and cause localized power interruptions.

Officials urge motorists to slow down and allow extra travel time during both the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes as snowfall continues across the region.

Snow showers and gusty winds may linger into late Tuesday morning before gradually tapering, though slick roads could persist beyond the advisory period.
