Michigan City, Ind. – Dangerous swimming conditions are gripping the southern end of Lake Michigan this weekend, with the highest risks focused on Berrien County, Michigan, through Sunday afternoon. Large waves and powerful currents are expected to keep conditions unsafe for beachgoers.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, La Porte County, Indiana, experienced the highest swim risk Saturday morning before the threat shifted north into Michigan. The agency warns that waves of 3 to 5 feet will gradually subside to 2 to 4 feet later today, but the strongest currents and highest waves remain near Michigan beaches. Winds out of the west at 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, are fueling the hazardous surf.

Officials urge swimmers to stay out of the water, especially at beaches in Berrien County where currents are most dangerous. Even experienced swimmers may quickly find themselves in trouble due to rip currents and breaking waves. Safer activities include staying on shore, visiting designated viewing areas, or choosing inland lakes for recreation.

Hazardous beach conditions remain in effect through Sunday afternoon in southwest Michigan. Additional advisories may be issued if waves stay elevated into early next week.
