Grand Rapids, Mich. – Strong storms could sweep through southwest Michigan by late afternoon Wednesday, bringing dangerous wind gusts and scattered thunderstorms across key cities from Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a hazardous weather outlook remains in effect today as storms develop across Mason, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, and surrounding counties. The strongest cells may produce wind gusts over 50 mph through tonight, with the main window for severe activity between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Storm chances are lower but not eliminated Thursday through Sunday. Lighter isolated cells may pop up each afternoon, especially near Lake Michigan and the I-96 corridor. The cities of Muskegon, Holland, and Lansing could see brief downpours or lightning strikes during evening hours. While widespread flooding isn’t expected, localized power outages or tree damage are possible.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and avoid open areas during thunderstorms. If you’re planning to travel or celebrate early for Independence Day, monitor local alerts and delay trips if lightning is nearby.

Storm chances continue into Sunday before drier weather returns next week. No spotter activation is expected, but updates will be issued if the threat level increases.
