Grand Rapids, MI – A strong line of storms is forecast to move through western Michigan Friday evening, with the National Weather Service warning of possible large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes.

According to the US National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, the most intense storms are expected to develop late Friday afternoon and continue through the evening hours. Cities including Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Detroit fall under an “enhanced” to “slight” risk zone for severe weather, with threats highest between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Transit systems and local emergency officials are urging residents to monitor alerts closely. Power outages may occur due to downed lines from gusty winds, and travel could be disrupted by falling tree limbs and hail damage. School districts across the region have not announced early dismissals, but parents are advised to stay updated.

The Michigan Department of Transportation may delay evening roadwork in high-risk zones, particularly in the I-94 and I-96 corridors.

Residents should secure outdoor items, have a weather radio ready, and review tornado safety plans. While spring storms are not unusual in Michigan, forecasters note this system is stronger than average for mid-April.
