Grand Rapids, MI – Strong storms are forecast to develop across Western Michigan Friday evening, bringing a threat of damaging winds to areas including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon.

According to the US National Weather Service Grand Rapids, non-severe storms may begin early Friday, but conditions are expected to worsen later in the day. Severe thunderstorms are likely to form by Friday evening, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 60 mph, making wind the main hazard. Hail and isolated tornadoes are also possible, especially in counties along the I-96 corridor.

Much of Western Michigan is under a Level 2 (Slight) or Level 3 (Enhanced) risk for severe weather. Areas south of Grand Rapids toward the Indiana border are most at risk for more intense activity.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and stay weather-aware through Friday night. Travel delays, power outages, and downed trees are possible, particularly after 6 p.m. The strongest storms may persist until midnight.

This system follows a typical spring storm pattern, but the combination of warm air and advancing cold fronts increases volatility. Stay tuned to local alerts for real-time warnings and safety guidance.
