Grand Rapids, MI – A hazardous beach warning is in effect for western Michigan, with the National Weather Service predicting waves between 2 to 5 feet. Beachgoers are urged to exercise caution as high rip currents and structural currents are expected.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning, issued Thursday morning, applies to the north sides of north piers, making areas such as Muskegon State Park, Holland State Park, and North Beach in South Haven particularly dangerous. The warning emphasizes the risk posed by rip currents, which can sweep even strong swimmers out into deeper waters.

Beach safety measures are crucial during these conditions. Officials advise staying dry when waves are high, wearing life jackets, and avoiding swimming near piers. For those who find themselves caught in a rip current, the recommended strategy is to flip, float, and follow the current until it subsides before swimming back to shore.
