Grand Rapids, MI – Freezing rain is expected to impact travel across western Michigan Wednesday night, creating dangerous conditions that could persist into Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will begin late Wednesday, transitioning into freezing rain after 4 a.m. Thursday. Areas near and south of I-96 are most at risk for ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch. Roads, bridges, and sidewalks will likely become slick, increasing the risk of accidents during the Thursday morning commute. Gusty winds could also contribute to tree damage and scattered power outages.
The extended forecast shows continued winter conditions for western Michigan. Thursday will be mostly cloudy, with temperatures reaching a high of 37°F before dropping to 20°F overnight. Friday remains cloudy with a high of 27°F and an overnight low of 21°F.
Looking into the weekend, snow showers are likely Saturday afternoon, with a high near 31°F. Another round of snow is possible Saturday night, with lows around 23°F. Sunday will be mostly cloudy, with a high of 30°F, followed by another cold night with temperatures near 20°F.
Drivers are urged to take precautions during this winter storm. Slow down, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions before heading out. If icy conditions develop, avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible delays.
Residents should also stay alert for power outages due to ice accumulation and wind gusts. Keep flashlights, extra blankets, and emergency supplies on hand.
