Grand Rapids, MI – Drivers across western Michigan are urged to exercise caution as road conditions continue to deteriorate due to black ice and sudden snow squalls.

According to local authorities, as of Monday afternoon, dark road surfaces across the region are concealing icy patches, creating hazardous driving conditions. First responders have reported numerous crashes and vehicles sliding off the road. In northern areas, lake effect snow bands are producing brief but intense whiteout conditions, further reducing visibility.

Officials are advising motorists to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and remain vigilant, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces where ice is more likely to form. Drivers are also reminded to move over well ahead of emergency responders attending to accidents.

The National Weather Service recommends preparing for rapidly changing conditions and advises avoiding travel if possible. For those on the road, maintaining a safe following distance and keeping headlights on in low visibility are key to staying safe.
