Grand Rapids, MI – Strong storms and heat near 100°F will bear down on southwest Michigan Friday, creating a dangerous mix of summer threats.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop Friday afternoon and evening across areas south of a Kalamazoo-to-Lansing line. Some storms could turn severe, packing wind gusts up to 60 mph, heavy rainfall, penny-sized hail, and frequent lightning. The highest risk stretches along major routes like I-94 and U.S. 131, particularly around Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and Jackson.

In addition to storms, heat index values could approach 100°F in southern zones by late Friday. Residents should limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and avoid leaving pets or children in vehicles.

By Sunday, the heat holds, with highs climbing back into the low 90s under mostly sunny skies. Another round of thunderstorms is possible late Sunday night into Monday, with rain chances increasing after 8 p.m. Cooler, drier conditions are expected to return midweek.

Drivers, especially those traveling between Grand Rapids and Lansing, should watch for slick roads and sudden wind gusts Saturday afternoon. While no spotter activation is needed, residents should monitor updates as conditions evolve.
