Grand Rapids, MI – Michigan residents are waking up to a quick shift from rain to crisp, cool air as a fall cold snap settles in. The National Weather Service warns of possible frost by early Thursday, October 9, across southwest Lower Michigan — including Grand Rapids, Kent, Ottawa, Allegan, and Barry counties.

According to the National Weather Service Grand Rapids office, isolated thunderstorms and heavy rain will taper off Tuesday morning. By midweek, clear skies and calm winds will bring a noticeable chill. Gardeners should cover sensitive plants, and commuters are advised to prepare for cold starts Thursday and Friday.

Wednesday will feature plenty of sunshine with highs near 62°F. By Wednesday night, temperatures will dip into the mid-30s, creating prime frost conditions in rural and low-lying areas. Thursday and Friday will stay mostly sunny, offering ideal conditions for fall leaf-viewing and pumpkin patch trips as highs rebound to the mid-60s.

Looking ahead, the weekend forecast brings more sunshine and a gradual warm-up. Saturday and Sunday will feel more comfortable, with highs between 68°F and 75°F heading into Columbus Day — perfect for early Halloween decorating or outdoor fall events.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and protect outdoor plants before the frost sets in.
