Grand Rapids, Michigan – Lake Michigan beaches are bracing for a chilly and choppy start to Memorial Day weekend, with moderate swim risks and water temperatures in the low 40s expected through Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, air temperatures will range 15 to 20 degrees below normal Friday, with daytime highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Waves are forecast to reach 2 to 4 feet today, prompting a moderate risk warning for swimmers and discouraging water activity.
Conditions will gradually improve over the weekend. By Saturday, wave heights are expected to drop to 1 to 3 feet with partly sunny skies and air temps between 50–55°F. Sunday looks milder, with highs near 60°F under mostly sunny skies and continued low swim risks.
The water, however, will remain dangerously cold through the weekend, ranging from 42 to 47°F. Officials are urging beachgoers to wear proper gear and avoid extended exposure in the lake.
If you’re heading to the shore, check local conditions and heed posted warnings. Beach hazards may continue through Monday, and additional advisories could be issued if winds shift.
