Springfield, Mass. – Scattered severe thunderstorms could sweep across western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut late Saturday, bringing the potential for damaging winds and large hail through 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Level 2 severe thunderstorm risk is in effect for Saturday, May 17, particularly impacting the Berkshires, Pioneer Valley, and neighboring areas in Connecticut. The storms are expected to develop after 11 a.m. and intensify through the afternoon and evening. Friday also carries a lower, Level 1 threat for isolated storms west of I-91 between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Communities such as Pittsfield, Northampton, and Enfield, Connecticut, should prepare for brief but intense storm activity, especially Saturday afternoon. Winds exceeding 50 mph and hail larger than a quarter inch are the main threats. Power outages and localized tree damage are possible, especially near the hill towns and western slopes.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor real-time alerts. Drivers should avoid open roads and delay non-essential travel during peak storm hours.

The storm system could shift eastward depending on conditions. Further updates are expected Friday evening, with additional advisories possible through the weekend.
