Amherst, Massachusetts – Snow is continuing to fall across western and central Massachusetts early Saturday, creating increasingly difficult travel conditions that are expected to last through the late afternoon hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Saturday for much of western and central Massachusetts. Snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected across the region, with localized totals of 5 to 6 inches possible in the highest elevations of the Berkshires.
Communities including Amherst, Greenfield, Northampton, Fitchburg, Orange, Barre, and Charlemont are seeing snow-covered roads, with the most hazardous conditions developing on untreated surfaces, hills, and secondary roadways. Higher terrain in western Hampshire, western Hampden, and Franklin counties is expected to experience the greatest travel impacts as snow continues through the day.
Travel could become very difficult at times, especially during periods of steadier snowfall. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Visibility may briefly drop during heavier snow bands, further complicating travel.
Snow is expected to taper later this afternoon as the advisory expires, but slick spots may linger into the evening, particularly in shaded and elevated areas. Motorists should continue to monitor conditions and use caution through the rest of the day.
