Baltimore, MD – Drivers and residents in the higher elevations of western Maryland and eastern West Virginia should prepare for hazardous winter conditions today as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, snowfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected across Garrett County, Maryland, and western portions of Grant, Mineral, and Pendleton counties in West Virginia. Forecasters note localized totals up to 5 inches are possible along west-facing slopes above 3,000 feet.
In addition to snowfall, very strong winds will be a major concern. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, leading to blowing snow, sharply reduced visibility, and the potential for tree damage and isolated power outages. These winds may also cause drifting snow on exposed roadways and mountain passes.
The most significant impacts are expected during the late afternoon and evening hours, potentially affecting the Friday evening commute. Snow-covered and icy roads are likely, particularly on higher-elevation routes and secondary roads that are slower to be treated.
Officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing visibility, especially in open and mountainous areas. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should use extra caution due to strong crosswinds.
Residents and travelers are encouraged to check the latest road conditions by calling 511 before heading out and to secure loose outdoor items that could be blown by strong winds.
