Cumberland, MD – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the western Maryland mountains and parts of eastern West Virginia as a strong cold front brings 3 to 6 inches of snow beginning early Monday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions throughout the day and into the night.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, the advisory covers Western Garrett County in Maryland, along with Western Grant and Western Pendleton counties in West Virginia, from 4 a.m. Monday through midnight Monday night.

Rain is expected to change to snow around or shortly after midnight, with snow showers continuing through Monday and Monday night. Forecasters warn of locally heavy snow bursts during the Monday afternoon and evening commute, when visibility may rapidly deteriorate and roads could become snow-covered and slick.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary driving during heavier snow periods. The most significant impacts are expected on mountain passes and untreated secondary roads, particularly at higher elevations.

Residents can check 511 for the latest road conditions and are reminded to use caution on sidewalks and driveways, which may quickly become icy.
