Paducah, Kentucky – A significant winter storm is likely to impact western Kentucky this weekend, with confidence increasing for heavy snow and possible icing that could disrupt travel and daily life.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Sunday afternoon. Forecasters say several inches of snow are likely across much of the region, with confidence growing that at least 5 inches of accumulation will occur in parts of western Kentucky.

The highest snowfall potential currently stretches across the Purchase and Pennyrile regions, where snow totals could exceed 5 inches if the storm tracks as expected. Icing is also possible, particularly across southern portions of the region, adding to the risk for hazardous travel conditions.

The NWS notes that uncertainty remains regarding the exact placement of the rain-snow line, which will depend on how much dry air is in place ahead of the system and how sharply the storm cuts off to the northwest. Even small shifts could significantly change snowfall and icing totals over short distances.

Forecasters warn that major travel impacts are likely, especially from Friday night through Saturday, as snow-covered roads and reduced visibility develop. Power outages are also possible where ice accumulates.

The Winter Storm Watch has been expanded farther north, reflecting increasing confidence in the storm’s reach. Additional updates are expected early Thursday as forecast details become clearer.

Residents with weekend travel plans are urged to monitor forecasts closely and prepare for winter driving conditions. Commuters, families, and delivery drivers may be especially affected if heavy snow or ice develops.
