Paducah, Kentucky – Strong wind gusts capable of knocking down small branches and causing isolated power outages will sweep across western Kentucky today, with peak gusts near 50 mph expected before midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Wind Advisory covers much of the region as strong southerly winds strengthen through the afternoon. Gusts are expected to reach 40 to 50 mph later today, even outside of thunderstorms, creating hazardous travel for high-profile vehicles.

Drivers along Interstate 24, Interstate 69, and the Purchase Parkway could experience sudden crosswinds, particularly on open stretches and bridges near the Ohio and Tennessee River corridors. Communities including Paducah, Murray, Mayfield, and Hopkinsville may also see loose outdoor objects blown around as winds intensify.

The pattern shifts overnight as a cold front sweeps through the lower Ohio Valley. Winds will turn northwest late tonight with gusts between 35 and 45 mph, keeping conditions blustery into the overnight hours even after the front passes.

Emergency officials recommend securing trash bins, patio furniture, and other loose items before the strongest winds arrive. Utility crews warn that isolated outages are possible if tree limbs fall onto power lines.

The strongest winds should gradually ease early Monday, though breezy conditions may linger across western Kentucky through the start of the new week.
