PADUCAH, Ky. – Western Kentucky will feel a dramatic shift from mild fall warmth to the first hard freeze of the season early next week, following a round of Friday thunderstorms. Temperatures near 75°F midweek will plunge into the 40s by Sunday, with morning lows dipping below freezing for the first time this fall.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, dry and seasonable weather continues through Thursday before a strong cold front sweeps across the region Friday. Showers and thunderstorms are likely along the front, with a few stronger cells possible, especially along I-24 from Cape Girardeau to Hopkinsville. Rain will taper Saturday, followed by a sharp cool down and gusty northwest winds.

By Sunday night into Monday morning, lows are forecast to fall into the upper 20s to near 30°F, ending the growing season across southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and southeast Missouri. Wind chills in the low 20s are expected for early risers Monday.

Residents are urged to protect outdoor plants, disconnect garden hoses, and check heating systems ahead of the cold surge. Farmers and gardeners should plan for widespread frost and freezing conditions lasting into Tuesday. Temperatures may rebound slightly by midweek but will stay well below normal.
