Paducah, Kentucky – Residents across western Kentucky, southeast Missouri, and far southern Illinois are facing a dangerous stretch of extreme heat, with the National Weather Service warning that heat index values could reach 110 degrees through 7 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for all of southeast Missouri, the Purchase region of western Kentucky, and parts of southern Illinois, including cities like Paducah, Cape Girardeau, Metropolis, and Carbondale. The warning covers communities along and west of a Benton-to-Metropolis line.

Health risks are climbing with each hour of extreme temperatures and humidity. Schools and businesses in areas like Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, and Herrin are urging precautions, while local emergency management is asking residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. Anyone working or playing outside is urged to take frequent breaks, drink water, and check on elderly neighbors. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures within minutes—never leave children or pets unattended.

Utilities report elevated energy demand, with rolling blackouts possible if the heat persists. Residents are encouraged to use air conditioning, stay in shaded or cooled spaces, and conserve electricity where possible.

The heat warning is expected to expire by 7 p.m. Thursday, but additional advisories may follow if the heat lingers. Stay tuned to local updates and check on vulnerable friends and family.
