Dodge City, Kansas – Heat index values are pushing into the upper 90s across much of western and central Kansas today, with cities like Garden City, Hays, and Great Bend expected to feel the worst by mid-afternoon. But attention is already turning toward a stronger threat: a round of potentially severe storms moving in Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a marginal to slight risk (levels 1–2 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms will develop Thursday from 5 p.m. to midnight, primarily impacting areas along and west of U.S. Highway 281. The greatest concern is for 60 mph wind gusts and isolated large hail ahead of the main line.

Temperatures today will approach 100°F in areas like Elkhart, Ulysses, and Syracuse, though humidity will remain low, keeping heat indices slightly below air temperatures. Farther east, humidity will boost heat indices to 96–98°F in Pratt, Hays, and Medicine Lodge by 3 p.m.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and secure loose outdoor items ahead of Thursday evening. Drivers should monitor updates closely, as storms could disrupt evening travel.

Storm warnings may be updated or expanded as models refine; stay weather-aware through late Thursday night.
