Dodge City, Kansas – Western Kansas faces another round of high heat and afternoon thunderstorm risk, as temperatures soar past 105 degrees and isolated storms threaten the region between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. today. According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a heat advisory remains in effect with dry, dangerous conditions persisting, while a marginal risk for severe weather is in place for counties west of a line from Hays to Liberal.
Showers and thunderstorms could spark across Scott City, Garden City, and Dodge City late this afternoon, but rain will likely be limited due to extremely dry air and high cloud bases. Any storms that do form may unleash wind gusts up to 60 mph, potentially causing power flickers and hazardous travel, especially on highways like US-50 and US-56. Emergency officials urge residents to remain indoors during storms, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary driving during high winds.
This evening’s thunderstorm chances will diminish after 9 p.m., but the heat is set to continue through the weekend. Stay tuned for updated advisories as severe weather could redevelop Saturday evening, bringing additional wind threats to far western Kansas.
