Dodge City, KS – Fire weather conditions are expected to become elevated across southwest and western Kansas on Saturday, as strong winds and dry air create an environment favorable for rapid fire spread, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City.
Forecasters warn that gusty northerly winds and low relative humidity will combine to heighten wildfire danger, particularly along and west of the U.S. Route 283 corridor — including areas near Dodge City, Garden City, and Scott City.
Any fires that ignite could spread quickly and become difficult to contain, especially in open fields and grasslands. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and delay any activities that could generate sparks or heat, such as using grills or farm equipment on dry ground.
The elevated fire threat will peak Saturday afternoon before conditions gradually improve by evening. Authorities recommend remaining vigilant and reporting any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
