Western Iowa Storm Risk: Severe Winds and Spot Showers Through Thursday, More Rain Saturday

Des Moines, Iowa – Strong-to-severe thunderstorms could rattle western and central Iowa through Thursday, bringing damaging winds and spotty downpours just as temperatures climb into the 90s. Western Iowa will see the greatest risk early, with showers rolling east into Des Moines by late afternoon Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, scattered storms are expected between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, with peak wind gusts topping 40 mph. While most storms will remain isolated, a few may turn severe, especially along Highway 20 and I-35 corridors.

Thursday:
Heat intensifies with highs near 91°F and a slight chance of lingering storms. Winds remain breezy out of the south.

Friday:
The dry break continues with mostly sunny skies and a high of 94°F, but another round of storms could arrive after midnight Friday.

Saturday into Sunday:
Storm chances increase again over the weekend. Showers likely Saturday night into Sunday morning with locally heavy rain possible.
