Western Iowa Braces for Extreme Heat, Potential Storms

Des Moines, IA – A severe heatwave is set to grip Des Moines and surrounding areas this weekend, with temperatures expected to climb above 100F. The US National Weather Service in Des Moines reports that the heat index values will peak from Saturday through Monday, creating hazardous conditions for residents.

According to the National Weather Service, isolated showers and thunderstorms are also possible in the south and east regions late Friday into Saturday. While a few stronger storms may develop, the overall threat of severe weather remains low.

The heat index values for Des Moines and nearby cities are predicted to reach 105F on Saturday, 106F on Sunday, and 105F on Monday. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in cool areas, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to mitigate heat-related risks.

Additionally, temperatures on Friday are expected to reach 87F, while Saturday will see highs around 92F. The heat intensifies on Sunday with a forecasted high of 95F, and Monday will continue the trend with a peak of 93F. Cooler temperatures are anticipated by Tuesday, with a high of 84F and a chance of showers.
