Galesburg, Illinois – Drivers in western Illinois could face sudden whiteout conditions overnight as powerful winds whip light snowfall into blizzard conditions, threatening the Monday morning commute across Knox and Stark counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Blizzard Warning takes effect at 10 p.m. Sunday and continues until 1 p.m. Monday for areas including Galesburg and Toulon. While snowfall totals are expected to remain relatively modest at 2 to 3 inches, winds gusting up to 50 mph will blow snow across roads and sharply reduce visibility.
These strong winds may drop visibility below one-quarter mile at times, especially along open rural highways such as U.S. Route 34 and Illinois Route 40, where drifting snow could quickly cover lanes.
Officials warn the most dangerous travel conditions may occur late Sunday night through the Monday morning commute, when blowing snow and slick pavement combine to create hazardous driving.
Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel once conditions deteriorate. If travel becomes unavoidable, drivers should carry winter survival kits including blankets, water, and a charged phone in case they become stranded.
Road conditions across Illinois can be monitored through the GettingAroundIllinois.com travel system, and additional advisories may be issued as the storm strengthens overnight.
