Monmouth, Illinois – Drivers across western Illinois could face near-zero visibility and dangerous road conditions starting by 7 p.m. Sunday as blizzard conditions sweep into Henderson and Warren counties.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday. Snowfall totals between 2 and 5 inches are expected, but powerful wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph will whip the snow across roadways, creating whiteout conditions and heavy drifting.
Communities including Monmouth and Oquawka could see travel quickly deteriorate overnight. Major routes such as U.S. Route 34 and Illinois Route 164 may experience sudden visibility drops, particularly in open rural areas where strong winds can push snow across lanes.
Officials warn that the powerful gusts may also break tree limbs and lead to scattered power disruptions across western Illinois. The most hazardous period is expected late Sunday night through the Monday morning commute when blowing snow could severely limit visibility.
Emergency managers recommend restricting travel to emergencies only. Anyone forced to drive should carry blankets, food, water, and a fully charged phone in case they become stranded.
Road conditions across the state are available through the Illinois Department of Transportation at GettingAroundIllinois.com.
Blizzard conditions are expected to ease by early Monday afternoon, though strong winds and drifting snow could linger. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions intensify overnight.
