Western Greenbrier County, WV – Life-threatening cold conditions are impacting western Greenbrier County today as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through Monday morning, creating a serious risk for frostbite and hypothermia.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 22 below zero are expected across Western Greenbrier County, including Quinwood, Duo, and Rainelle. The warning is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday.
Meteorologists warn that exposed skin can develop frostbite in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions. Prolonged exposure without proper clothing may also lead to hypothermia, especially overnight and during early morning hours when wind chills are coldest.
Residents who must go outside are urged to dress in multiple layers, including insulated coats, hats, gloves, and face coverings. Officials recommend limiting time outdoors whenever possible and checking on vulnerable neighbors, including the elderly.
The extreme cold may also cause issues for homes and infrastructure. To reduce the risk of frozen pipes, residents should wrap exposed plumbing, drain outdoor water lines, or allow faucets to drip slowly during the coldest periods.
Pet owners are strongly encouraged to keep animals indoors, as the severe wind chills can quickly become fatal for pets left outside.
Western Greenbrier County, located in southeastern West Virginia within the Appalachian region, is expected to remain under these dangerous conditions through Monday morning. Residents should continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and follow guidance from local emergency management officials.
