Grand Junction, CO – A combination of triple-digit heat, gusty winds, and scattered thunderstorms is set to elevate wildfire danger across western Colorado on Friday, with conditions peaking in the afternoon and lasting into the evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from noon to 9 p.m., covering Mesa County, the Grand Valley, and much of the Western Slope.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, humidity levels will drop to 8–13% as winds gust up to 25 mph. While thunderstorms may bring brief rain, lightning strikes outside of rain cores could easily ignite new fires. Officials urge residents to avoid any outdoor burning or spark-producing activities, including welding or operating machinery without spark arrestors.

The hot, dry pattern continues into Saturday with another chance of afternoon storms. Friday will see highs near 91°F in Grand Junction, but temperatures are expected to climb back into the upper 90s by early next week, keeping fire danger elevated.

Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, keep emergency kits ready, and report any signs of smoke immediately. The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Friday, with further advisories possible through the weekend.
