Grand Junction, CO – Temperatures are surging to record-breaking levels across western Colorado today, with highs climbing into the 80s and threatening records that have stood for more than a century.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, strong high pressure over the Desert Southwest is driving this unusual March heat, pushing Grand Junction to around 82 degrees Thursday and near 85 degrees by Friday afternoon. That exceeds the standing record of 81 degrees and puts the region well above seasonal norms.
Across the region, Montrose could reach 79 to 80 degrees, Durango into the low 80s, and even mountain communities like Aspen and Telluride are expected to climb into the upper 60s and low 70s. Some of these readings are running 5 to 10 degrees above existing daily records.
The heat will be widespread, impacting outdoor activities, snowpack melt, and increasing early-season fire concerns in lower elevations.
A weak system arriving Sunday into Monday will bring a slight cooldown, but temperatures are expected to rebound quickly by midweek with more record warmth possible.
Residents should stay hydrated, limit outdoor burning, and prepare for continued warm and dry conditions through the end of the week.
