State College, PA – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. EDT Saturday for much of Pennsylvania, where millions of residents face the potential for severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 492 includes 50 counties stretching from the Ohio border to south-central and portions of central Pennsylvania.
Major cities under the watch include Pittsburgh, Erie, Harrisburg, York, Lancaster, Altoona, State College, Johnstown, Butler, Washington, Beaver, Greensburg, Indiana, Meadville, Warren, Franklin, Uniontown, Carlisle, Lebanon, Williamsport, and Pottsville.
Forecasters warn that thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening could produce damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail up to ping-pong ball size, torrential rainfall, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and a few tornadoes. Heavy rainfall may also cause localized flooding and hazardous travel conditions.
Residents with outdoor plans are encouraged to monitor weather conditions closely and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Secure loose outdoor items and be prepared to move to a sturdy building if severe weather approaches.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means atmospheric conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms to develop. It does not mean severe weather is occurring everywhere in the watch area. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued, take immediate action to protect yourself.
The watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. EDT, though additional warnings are expected as storms develop across the Commonwealth.
