Buffalo, N.Y. – Unrelenting heat is sweeping across western and central New York this Saturday, pushing heat index values to near triple digits from Buffalo and Rochester to Syracuse and Binghamton. Residents across 22 counties are urged to stay indoors as temperatures and humidity climb, creating dangerous conditions through 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Buffalo and Binghamton, a heat advisory is in effect from noon until 7 p.m. for Niagara, Erie, Monroe, Broome, Onondaga, and surrounding counties. Heat index readings are expected to reach between 95 and 100, especially in cities like Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, and Binghamton. Officials warn that these conditions could quickly cause heat exhaustion or even heat stroke for anyone exposed too long.

Drivers and outdoor workers are advised to reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning for anyone working outside. Local roads, including I-90 through Buffalo, I-81 near Syracuse, and Route 17 in Binghamton, could see slowdowns as drivers and pedestrians cope with the heat.

Health officials urge everyone to check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those without air conditioning. Keep pets indoors, stay hydrated, and never leave children or animals in vehicles. If you notice signs of heat illness—like heavy sweating, dizziness, or confusion—move to a cool place immediately and call 911 if symptoms worsen.

The heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday, but more alerts could follow if conditions persist. Stay tuned to local updates as the heat wave continues across New York.
