Buffalo, NY – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for much of western and central New York, where forecasters warn that heavy lake-effect snow and strong winds could cause whiteout conditions and dangerous travel from Wednesday evening through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the heaviest snow is expected in areas south and east of Buffalo, across Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and southern Erie counties, where 7 inches or more may fall. Farther north and east, including Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties, lake-effect bands could persist into Saturday morning, adding even more accumulation.
Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph will likely cause blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to near zero at times. The NWS warns that Thanksgiving Day and Friday travelers should prepare for slick, snow-covered roads and possible power outages from falling branches and heavy snow.
Forecasters emphasize that band placement and timing remain uncertain, meaning snowfall amounts could vary sharply within just a few miles. However, anyone driving along Interstates 90, 86, and 81, or Route 219, should expect rapidly changing conditions and potential whiteouts.
Officials recommend travelers monitor forecast updates, avoid unnecessary travel, and carry winter emergency kits with blankets, flashlights, and food supplies.
