Albany, NY – Severe thunderstorms wreaked havoc across western and central New York yesterday, causing significant wind damage and 5 reported tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) is currently assessing the situation to confirm any tornado activity.

According to the NWS, the storms unleashed heavy rainfall, with radar and rain gauge data indicating over 4 inches in parts of the Adirondacks and Vermont. Flash flooding was widespread, with Vermont experiencing substantial impacts from the deluge.

The storms left behind a trail of destruction, including downed trees, power outages, and flooded roads. Authorities are urging residents to avoid floodwaters due to potential hazards such as live wires, harmful bacteria, and debris.

Today, NWS meteorologists are on the ground conducting storm surveys to gather detailed information about the damage. The majority of tornado activity was reported south of Buffalo, with reports also coming north of Utica. This effort involves coordination with emergency managers, storm spotters, and local residents to evaluate the storm’s impact thoroughly.

As cleanup efforts begin, the NWS emphasizes the importance of safety and vigilance. Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates and heed safety warnings. For further information and safety guidelines, visit the NWS website at weather.gov.
