BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Scattered thunderstorms are moving across the Southern Tier of New York and much of northeastern Pennsylvania this afternoon, bringing the potential for lightning, heavy downpours, and gusty winds. Drivers and outdoor workers could face rapidly changing conditions as storms track east through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the strongest cells could produce wind gusts up to 40 mph, along with brief but intense rain capable of ponding roads and reducing visibility. Storms are impacting areas including Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, Broome, and Delaware counties in New York, as well as Bradford, Susquehanna, Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Pike counties in Pennsylvania.

Motorists are urged to slow down in heavy rain, avoid flooded roadways, and seek shelter indoors when thunder is heard. Lightning can strike several miles from a storm, so even locations under lighter rain should use caution.

Thunderstorms are expected to diminish by early evening, though a few lingering showers could persist into tonight. Additional weather statements may be issued if stronger storms develop.
