Syracuse, N.Y. – A sweltering heat wave is set to grip much of central and western New York on Thursday, sending heat index values soaring to near 100 degrees from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. Residents in Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, and nearby cities are urged to take extra precautions as the dangerous combination of high temperatures and humidity raises the risk for heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Binghamton and Buffalo, a heat advisory will cover Broome, Chemung, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, Southern Cayuga, Tioga, Tompkins, Yates, Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Genesee, Livingston, and Ontario counties. The hottest conditions are expected during the afternoon and early evening hours Thursday.

Major cities like Syracuse, Rochester, Elmira, and Niagara Falls may experience heat index values between 95 and 99 degrees. Emergency managers recommend avoiding strenuous activity outdoors, especially during peak heat. Stay hydrated, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, and check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives. Never leave children or pets in vehicles—even a few minutes can be fatal.

Some cooling centers may open in urban areas, and local agencies advise using air conditioning or spending time in shaded public spaces. Outdoor workers are advised to take frequent breaks in cool areas. Watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion—dizziness, nausea, or heavy sweating—and call 911 if you suspect heat stroke.

The heat advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday, but officials warn that similar weather could persist into Friday. Watch for further updates and additional advisories if heat continues.
