Louisville, Kentucky – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across much of Kentucky late Thursday, bringing the threat of large hail, damaging wind gusts and even an isolated tornado by late afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a strengthening surface low will track into the western Great Lakes by Thursday night while warm, moisture-rich air spreads across the Commonwealth. That setup will fuel scattered showers and storms developing Thursday afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front. Some storms may intensify quickly, especially from western into central Kentucky.
The greatest risk zone includes Louisville, Bowling Green, Elizabethtown and Lexington, where forecasters highlight the potential for hail and wind gusts topping 60 mph. Travel along Interstates 65, 64 and 71 could become hazardous during heavier downpours. Localized power outages are also possible if stronger cells develop.
Western Kentucky, including Paducah and Owensboro, may see storms arrive earlier in the afternoon, while eastern counties could face impacts into the late evening hours. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices and monitor watches or warnings as conditions evolve.
Storm chances diminish late Thursday night as the cold front pushes east, but additional advisories could be issued if confidence in severe development increases.
