Westchester County, NY – Drivers and event-goers across Westchester County will see a heightened police presence tonight and Wednesday as county officials roll out increased DWI enforcement and security patrols for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
According to the Westchester County Police Department (WCPD), officers will be conducting expanded Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) patrols on major roadways, including the Bronx River Parkway, Cross County Parkway, Saw Mill River Parkway, Hutchinson River Parkway, as well as local roads throughout Mount Kisco and Cortlandt.
Officials say the goal of the initiative is to prevent alcohol- and drug-related crashes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year and to keep residents and visitors safe as celebrations take place countywide.
In addition to traffic enforcement, police will also increase visibility at large-scale public events, religious facilities, train stations, commuter parking areas, bus routes, shopping malls, and other gathering locations under Operation Safeguard, a countywide public safety and counter-terrorism initiative.
Police emphasized that the increased presence — which may include heavily armed tactical officers — is purely precautionary and not in response to any specific threat.
The county’s Hazardous Devices Unit, commonly referred to as the Bomb Squad, will also conduct pre-event safety sweeps at mass-gathering locations when requested by local police departments. These sweeps may involve explosive-detection canines as part of standard safety protocols.
Residents are urged to plan ahead, use designated drivers or rideshare services, and expect possible traffic stops and delays during overnight hours.
“Stay safe, Westchester,” police said in a New Year’s message to the community.
