Charleston, WV – A wintry mix of freezing rain and snow is expected to impact portions of the West Virginia mountains today, creating hazardous road conditions for travelers. Ice accumulations may exceed 0.25 inches in the northern mountain areas, with lesser amounts in central and southern regions. Untreated roads could quickly become impassable.

According to the National Weather Service Charleston, the ice and wintry conditions began early Sunday morning and are expected to persist through Monday morning. Areas along higher elevations, including highways and local roads, face the highest risk of slick and icy surfaces. Motorists are urged to avoid travel if possible or use extreme caution when navigating untreated roads.

In addition to freezing rain, portions of West Virginia could see several inches of snow and sleet accumulation, especially in higher elevations. The weather system will begin to weaken by late Monday. However, temperatures will remain chilly, and additional precipitation is forecast through midweek.

Five-Day Forecast:

• Monday: Chance of rain and snow, highs near 46°F.

• Tuesday: Sunny, highs around 57°F.

• Wednesday: Heavy rain likely, highs near 60°F.

• Thursday: Wintry mix possible in the morning, clearing to a high of 40°F.

• Friday: Clear skies, temperatures warming into the mid-40s.

Residents should remain vigilant for updates and weather alerts over the next 48 hours. Power outages may occur in areas with significant ice accumulation.
