Elkins, WV – Travel through Randolph, Pocahontas, and Webster counties could turn hazardous Thanksgiving Thursday night as snow, strong winds, and bitter cold settle into West Virginia’s high elevations.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 7 p.m. Thursday and lasts through 5 p.m. Friday. Snow accumulations between 2 to 4 inches are expected, paired with wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Blowing snow may reduce visibility to under a quarter mile at times, especially overnight.

The advisory targets Southeast Randolph, Northwest Pocahontas, and Southeast Webster counties, where travel may be slick and dangerous. Wind chills could plunge as low as minus 5 degrees, posing risks for exposed skin and unprepared drivers.

Motorists are urged to allow extra time, reduce speed on snow-covered roads, and keep an emergency kit in their vehicles. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for sudden drops in visibility.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve Friday evening, but further advisories are possible if snow bands persist or temperatures stay below freezing into the weekend.
