Charleston, WV – The first winter storm of the season is now underway across the Middle Ohio Valley and central Appalachians, bringing snow, freezing temperatures, and slippery travel conditions through Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, snow showers will persist throughout the day and evening before tapering off overnight. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for areas near Charleston, Beckley, and Elkins, where 4 to 8 inches of snow are possible, with locally higher amounts in the mountains. Surrounding regions are under Winter Weather Advisories for 2 to 4 inches of accumulation.

Temperatures are expected to fall well into the 20s tonight, with wind chills dropping into the teens and single digits across higher terrain. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, producing blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The NWS cautions that slick spots are likely on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads, especially during the evening and early Tuesday commute. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check updated forecasts before heading out.

While most lowland areas will see only light accumulations, even brief bursts of heavier snow could create slushy conditions and rapid visibility changes.
