Western Greenbrier County, West Virginia – Heavy snow and strong winds are expected to create dangerous conditions through Saturday morning, prompting a Winter Storm Warning.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Western Greenbrier County until 10 a.m. Saturday. Forecasters expect total snow accumulations between 3 and 8 inches, accompanied by wind gusts up to 60 mph.
The combination of snowfall and high winds is expected to significantly impact travel. Roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous. Blowing snow may sharply reduce visibility at times, making driving conditions treacherous, especially during the Friday evening and overnight travel periods.
Strong winds combined with the weight of accumulating snow could also bring down tree limbs and power lines. Officials warn that sporadic power outages are possible, along with localized tree damage.
The warning includes the communities of Quinwood, Rainelle, and Duo, where conditions may deteriorate rapidly as snowfall intensifies and winds increase.
Emergency officials urge residents to delay travel if possible. Those who must be on the roads are advised to drive with extreme caution, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Hills, curves, and untreated roads may become especially dangerous.
Drivers are encouraged to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case they become stranded. Travelers can check the latest road conditions by dialing 511.
The warning remains in effect until Saturday morning, when conditions are expected to gradually improve as the storm system moves out of the region.
