Winchester, VA – A winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and ice to portions of Virginia and West Virginia starting Tuesday, with hazardous travel conditions expected through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Tuesday morning through Wednesday, covering the Shenandoah Valley, northern Virginia, and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. Snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches are forecast, with locally higher totals possible. Ice accumulation of up to 0.3 inches may worsen road conditions.
Snow will begin falling Tuesday morning in western Virginia before spreading eastward. Heavier snow is expected Tuesday evening into the night, followed by a wintry mix of freezing rain and snow into Wednesday morning. Slippery roads and poor visibility could impact both the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.
Residents should delay travel if possible and prepare for icy conditions. If travel is necessary, officials urge drivers to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and keep emergency supplies in their cars. Power outages and tree damage are possible due to ice accumulation.
