Charleston, WV – A powerful cold front is set to sweep through West Virginia this weekend, bringing rain, snow, and plunging temperatures. Residents should prepare for accumulating snow Saturday night into Sunday and dangerous cold early next week.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rain will likely begin Saturday afternoon in Charleston, transitioning to snow overnight as temperatures drop sharply. Areas around higher elevations may experience 1 to 3 inches of snowfall, with heavier accumulations likely to the southeast. Sunday will remain snowy and cold, with daytime highs barely reaching the upper 20s.

An arctic blast follows Sunday night, pushing temperatures to single digits by Monday morning and potentially dipping below zero in outlying areas. Wind chills may become hazardous, particularly Monday and Tuesday. Roads such as Interstate 77 and US Route 60 could see slick conditions from snow and ice accumulation, so motorists should exercise caution.

For those planning Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities, expect a frigid high of 13°F under partly sunny skies. By Tuesday, temperatures will remain well below freezing, with highs near 18°F and overnight lows around 1°F.

The NWS warns of potential infrastructure impacts, including frozen pipes and power line stress, due to prolonged cold. Residents are advised to secure emergency supplies, check heating systems, and prepare vehicles for icy conditions.

Snow spotters are encouraged to report accumulation via the NWS Charleston office hotline. Winter weather advisories may be issued as conditions develop. Stay updated with your local forecasts throughout the weekend.
