Logan, WV – A sharp overnight temperature drop will push readings into the upper 20s, creating a prolonged freeze that threatens crops, plumbing, and early spring growth across parts of West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia before sunrise Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Freeze Warning is in effect from midnight through 10 a.m. Sunday for southern and western West Virginia, northeast Kentucky, and southwest Virginia. Valley locations could fall as low as 27 degrees, with the coldest pockets forming in sheltered low-lying areas.

Communities including Logan, Williamson, Welch, Ashland, and Louisa face up to 10 hours of freezing conditions. Cold air will settle into valleys, increasing frost coverage and raising the risk of damage to fruit trees, gardens, and other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor pipes in rural areas may also freeze.

Residents should cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and allow faucets to drip or wrap exposed pipes. Travel impacts are minimal, but early morning frost could develop on bridges and untreated surfaces.

Temperatures will rebound after 10 a.m. Sunday, though additional cold mornings remain possible into early next week. More freeze alerts could be issued if clear skies persist.
