Charleston, W.Va. – Dangerous heat will grip much of West Virginia through Saturday evening as a heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m., with temperatures climbing into the low 90s and heat index values approaching 100. A few late-day thunderstorms could add to travel and power concerns.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, isolated storms may develop after 3 p.m., with the strongest cells capable of producing heavy rain and frequent lightning. Humid conditions will linger into the evening, keeping overnight lows near 69.

The Kanawha Valley, including Charleston and nearby communities such as South Charleston, Dunbar, and Nitro, should prepare for both oppressive heat and sudden downpours. Residents planning outdoor events are urged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity, and seek shaded areas during peak afternoon hours.

Roadways, particularly Interstates 64 and 77, may become slick in heavier showers, while brief visibility reductions could impact evening commuters. Power crews are also monitoring for possible storm-related outages.

Relief is expected as conditions moderate slightly by midweek, though scattered storms remain in the forecast. The National Weather Service advises staying alert for any additional warnings if storms intensify.
