Charleston, W.Va. – A burst of late-season heat will push temperatures into the mid-80s through early next week before showers arrive to cool things down. Afternoon highs may challenge daily records Monday, with the National Weather Service noting readings near 86 degrees in Charleston.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, sunshine will dominate the region through Monday with only light winds and dry air. Highs Friday through Sunday will range from 82 to 85 degrees, with overnight lows holding in the 50s. The warm spell is unusual for early October and could stress those without air conditioning, particularly in schools and assisted-living facilities.

The dry stretch will end Tuesday as a weak front crosses the Kanawha Valley and surrounding counties. NWS forecasters say there is a 40 percent chance of showers during the day Tuesday, with a better chance Tuesday night into Wednesday. Rainfall coverage is expected to be around 60 to 80 percent, especially along I-64 east toward Beckley and west into Putnam and Cabell counties.

Travelers should be alert for wet roads and reduced visibility during the Tuesday evening commute. Temperatures will tumble after the front, with highs dropping into the lower 70s and overnight lows slipping into the upper 40s by Wednesday night.

Officials urge residents to take advantage of the mild weekend to prepare homes and vehicles for colder weather later this month. Stay hydrated during outdoor events, check on older neighbors, and plan for damp travel conditions early next week.
