Charleston, W.Va. – Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across West Virginia today, but forecasters warn a stronger round of storms on Thursday could bring damaging winds and heavy rain.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a cold front moving into the state Thursday afternoon will fuel stronger to severe storms, with gusty winds posing the main threat. Lightning and localized heavy downpours are also possible, particularly along the Ohio River Valley and into central West Virginia.

Charleston, Huntington, and Parkersburg sit in the zone of greatest concern for storm impacts, while higher terrain communities like Snowshoe may see lingering showers into the weekend. Travel delays are possible on I-64, I-77, and I-79 during the Thursday evening commute, and power outages could occur where gusts bring down trees and wires.

Drier weather briefly returns Friday, but another cold front will arrive Friday night into Saturday, renewing the chance of widespread showers and storms. Forecasters urge residents to secure outdoor items, charge devices in case of outages, and avoid travel during periods of heavy rain or strong winds.

Warnings and advisories may be updated as storms develop Thursday, with additional rainfall expected to continue into the weekend.
