CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Streetlights shimmer on rain-slick roads this morning as steady showers drift across the Kanawha Valley, bringing a damp and chilly start to the day. Umbrellas are out early, but by the weekend, Charleston’s Halloween events will enjoy a dry, mild rebound — the calm after the midweek soaking.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, rain will continue on and off through Thursday as a slow-moving system pushes east. Rainfall totals between a half-inch and an inch are possible, especially along the I-64 corridor from Huntington through Beckley. Slick roads, wet leaves, and ponding in low-lying areas may slow travel during the morning and evening commutes.
By Friday, the clouds clear and sunshine returns. Temperatures will climb into the mid-50s during the day, setting the stage for near-perfect Halloween conditions. Trick-or-treat hours look comfortable with readings in the upper 40s after sunset, a light west breeze, and no rain in sight. Parents should still plan for a few layers as cooler air settles by mid-evening.
The first weekend of November brings more fall perfection. Saturday and Sunday will be partly to mostly sunny with highs near 58°F — great for football, hiking, or late yard cleanup before the next cool front arrives early next week.
Residents are encouraged to finish outdoor preparations by Sunday, as longer-range models hint at colder air by midweek.
And don’t forget — clocks “fall back” early Sunday morning for the end of Daylight Saving Time. A chilly November lies ahead.
