RAINELLE, W.Va. – A powerful early-winter system is blanketing western Greenbrier County with heavy snow and gusty winds, creating treacherous travel conditions across mountain routes from Sunday night through early Tuesday. Snow accumulations between 3 and 8 inches are expected, with gusts up to 45 mph likely to bring down tree branches and cause spotty power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. EST Tuesday for western Greenbrier County, including Rainelle, Duo, and Quinwood. The heaviest snowfall is forecast to occur late Sunday into early Monday, with additional bursts expected Monday afternoon and evening as cold air deepens over the Allegheny Mountains.
Forecasters warn that travel could be very difficult, particularly along U.S. Route 60 and state routes 20 and 41, where snow-covered roads and drifting will persist through both Monday commutes. The combination of wet snow and wind may also lead to tree damage and isolated outages, especially in higher terrain.
Officials urge residents to avoid nonessential travel, secure outdoor items, and keep flashlights, food, and water in vehicles in case of emergencies. Conditions will gradually improve by early Tuesday morning as snow showers taper and winds ease.
