Charleston, WV – A major shift in weather is expected across West Virginia this week as a multi-day system brings widespread rainfall and a drop in temperatures, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.
For the lowlands, the week will begin with partly sunny skies and near-normal temperatures Monday, followed by increasing clouds and a rising chance of rain Tuesday. The most widespread rainfall is expected Wednesday into Thursday, when rain chances reach 80–90%. Rain will taper off into lighter showers Friday and Saturday.
High temperatures will fall from the low 60s early in the week to the low 50s by Friday, running 10–15 degrees below normal for late October.
Meanwhile, the central and northern mountains will see a sharper transition. After a mild start, temperatures will plunge midweek, allowing for a mix of rain and snow showers Thursday night into Friday morning. By week’s end, daytime highs in areas like Snowshoe may hover near 40°F, with overnight lows in the low 30s.
Forecasters say this system will bring beneficial rainfall statewide, helping to alleviate ongoing dry conditions. However, travelers—especially in the higher elevations—should prepare for wet roads and possible early-season snow by late week.
Cool and unsettled weather is expected to persist into next weekend, marking one of the coldest patterns of the fall so far.
